Spikes and surges are insidious components of electricity and are usually generated within business offices by e.g. elevators, laser jet printers, copiers and florescent lighting which also adds RFI/EMI. Their effect is that you sometimes notice ‘a glitch’, e.g. a screen lockup, but most of these power anomalies don’t cause catastrophic failure. What they do is ‘eat away’ at your electrical components to cause premature failure.
Because spikes, surges and RFI/EMI are the most prevalent of the 9 (nine?!!) power problems, a good surge protector is the best bang for your buck. For your “Mission Critical” equipment you need PANAMAX and more, but that’s another story.

Price is only a guideline. What is much more important is how fast and how efficiently a surge protector clamps a spike or a surge, and how a catastrophic surge affects it. For brevity’s sake let’s just bottom-line this. We tested a number of “quality” name brand surge protectors and every one of them blew CLOSED. That means they did their job until a power surge that was just a joule of energy absorption above their rating was applied. At that moment they stopped doing their job and effectively became a “Power Bar”, Unless they had an audible alarm, a “Not Working” light (that you could see), or if you’re in the habit of sniffing your surge protectors daily for the tell tale smell of burned electronics, you just wouldn’t know. |
